A pair of vintage Japanese lacquered metal antique vase lamps shouldered baluster form, dressed with French ormolu mounts

A wonderfully abstract Japanese design, with geometric motifs highlighted with foliates, and dressed with fine French bronze ormolu mounts. Japanese metalwork is of extraordinary quality and complexity. After the abolition of the samurai caste, the military nobles, in 1878, and the prohibition on carrying swords, the metalworkers needed to employ their finely honed talents to decorate metalwork. This pair of vases show their 'mettle'!
